“60s library swings again”
Our sensitive restoration of Grade II Listed Hornsey Library is the front cover feature in the RIBAJ April edition.
In the article written by Historic England’s specialist in post-war architecture, Elain Harwood, our dedication to the social details of the library has been recognised. Our meticulous restoration of the listed bookshelves is described as “a labour of love which involved salvaging and reassembling bottom boards, panels and parapets for those deemed beyond repair”.
Our “carefully chosen lighting” completes the 1960s look, while the courtyard garden is “good example of the care taken on little details that give pleasure”.
We are hopeful the public can enjoy this fantastic much-loved public facility soon.

Our socially progressive scheme, Morland Gardens, has been featured in the World Architecture News.
Morland Gardens is a socially focussed mixed-use scheme in the London Borough of Brent. The scheme includes 65 new council homes, a 2500m² state-of-the-art adult education centre with public café and 700m² of affordable workspace.
The £43m scheme is situated on a council-owned site in the heart of Stonebridge Ward, one of Brent’s most deprived areas. It will deliver 100% affordable council homes, combined with a significant investment in skills and enterprise. Thirty two percent of the 65 new homes will be three to four-bed, and an additional 12% will be dedicated units for disabled residents.

Wayne Head has been invited by director at the Royal Society of Architects in Wales, Elinor Weekly, to chair a RIBA student event on the 13th April.
This event is aimed at Part 1 Year 3 students graduating this year and is open to all RIBA Student and Associate Members. The expert panel will be made up of speakers from practices such as Stride Treglown and the RIBA.

We were very lucky to have recently been discussing applications of hempcrete and bio-based construction with Alex Sparrow. This lively discussion involved a thought provoking presentation followed by an engaging workshop regarding the application of hempcrete walls in our ongoing projects. We continuously strive to move towards our zero-carbon goal, which is now one step closer.

We have helped communicate the vision for Hill House, a grade II listed council asset in St Helier. The design involves a greenhouse built using reused windows, as part of an initiative started by Community Action Sutton who are running a crowdfunding campaign, pitching for the Mayor of London #MakeLondon fund.
Hill house has acted as a Food Hub during COVID-19 recovery, been part of the 'men in sheds' projects, and community connectors. The project vision looks to build on this culture of community activity by transforming the outdoor space into an urban community garden. This brings people together, provides the local community with an opportunity to grow their own food, make new friends, improve their wellbeing and mental health.

Our Pop-Up Schools Initiative has been featured in the RETHINK Design Guide: Architecture for a post-pandemic world.
This innovative design guide draws together expert guidance on designing in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic for key architectural sectors: housing, workplace, civic and cultural, hospitality, education, infrastructure and civic placemaking. It provides design inspiration to architects on how they can respond to the challenges and opportunities of a post-pandemic environment and how architects ensure they are at the forefront of the best design in this new world. Recently completed, the preservation and restoration of Grade II Listed Hornsey Library has been shortlisted for the Architect's Journal Retrofit Awards 2021.
We have taken care to preserve the historic fabric and proportions of this much-loved, light-filled public building. This photo looks through to the new Children’s Library, expanded and upgraded with playful lighting, seating and fittings.
The existing building was retained, restored and reused as much as possible, including original furniture and shelving, minimising the environmental impact of new materials. We upgraded the distinctive curtain walling, library roof and building services to achieve a predicted 49% improvement on CO2 emissions, including a new rooftop PV array. The library is currently closed due to Covid, but we hope that everyone will be able to enjoy this fantastic public asset soon.

As groundworks are progressing, we would like to draw attention to the Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) strategy, contributing to the project's green agenda. In harmony with the context, a pond has been carved out of the ground on the south-west corner of the site to provide most of the attenuation. Water treatment will be achieved through a careful selection of vegetation and design of levels.
Despite the cold weather, we are conducting regular site visits. Stay tuned!

As part of our decarbonisation programme we have begun work on a major retrofit project across 10 sites in South Wales. The sites all have poorly performing existing housing stock constructed immediately after WWII with uninsulated load bearing concrete walls. The thermal performance will be improved through the implementation of natural insulation. With an emphasis on using onsite renewables to support improvements on internal layouts, private amenity spaces and existing leakages.

CLTH have been named as finalists in the Sambou Toura Drame competition to design a new elementary school in Senegal.
Our proposal, produced by architect Brahim Kanoute and architectural assistant Bareera Borhan, brought together familiar local forms and materials with an exciting plan arrangement. Approach, entrance and arrival onto the site is via a covered colonnade and planted veranda. This same space provides a shaded hang out space for pupils and staff during the day and ‘opens up’ to host local events.
The competition was held by ‘Archstorming’ who seek to improve humanitarian issues through architecture in collaboration with the NGO ‘Lets Build My School’.

2020 was a year of new beginnings for the team at Curl la Tourelle Head Architecture. From moving in to our new office at Underwood Street to having to cope with the surprises brought on by the pandemic. We have adapted to change and continued to build on developing our portfolio of work. Our Pop-up schemes were developed as a direct response to the pandemic and we are proud to have assisted schools across the country in providing COVID safe outdoor learning. We are pleased to say our restoration of the Grade II Listed Hornsey Library, pictured above, has successfully moved through the RIBA stages to completion, with marvellous feedback received from staff and users.

Wayne Head has been invited to lecture to Queen's University Belfast Architecture Society. The talk will feature details of significant structures in the Kings Cross area and more recently ‘New Towns’ Milton Keynes and Stevenage drawn by CLTH’s Gabriella Watkins and Eleanor Hill. Wayne will also discuss how this exercise led to interesting conversations with the Sir John Soane Museum, Focal Point Gallery Southend and Milton Keynes council.

CLTH are taking part in the #ChristmasChallenge20 with adult crisis support charity Hestia, during which donations are doubled for a limited time only.
Hestia provides high quality support for adults and children in crisis across London. During the first lockdown this involved opening a new emergency refuge for women and children needing to flee domestic abuse.
The pandemic has been difficult for everyone, but even more so for some. CLTH acknowledge this and therefore this year, instead of our annual Secret Santa festivities, we are taking part in the ‘virtual giving tree’ with Hestia. Our staff will be gifting presents that were chosen by Hestia's Domestic Abuse Service.
We hope to continue working with Hestia in the future and would like to wish everyone a safe and happy winter.

Wayne will also discuss the further projects this initial idea generated, and the importance of innovation in smaller practices.

NLA have featured our Urban Farm proposal for Staples Corner in Brent, a project which aims to create the UK’s first major centre for hydroponic and aquaponic farming whilst also providing 2000 new net-zero homes, and 3000 new jobs working in and around a new green infrastructure.
NLA described the scheme as "an exemplar project that push[es] the bar of environmental design and contribute[s] to London’s ambition to become a low carbon city"

Our speculative masterplan for turning a polluted and forgotten area of Brent into one of the country's major centres of food production is to be featured in the upcoming NLA Zero Carbon publication. We have been looking into creating the UK’s first major centre for hydroponic and aquaponic farming – like other major centres in Scandinavia and in America who are already utilising these modern farming technologies. The proposal aims to provide 2000 new net-zero homes, and 3000 new jobs working in and around a new green infrastructure.

We've had the fantastic news that Morland Gardens, our social housing, adult education and affordable workplace scheme for the London Borough of Brent, has won the Planning Award 2020 in the Mixed Use Development category.
Congratulations also to Brent, who have made this signification £43m investment in the the heart of Stonebridge Ward, one of Brent’s most deprived areas. The judges praised the use of a local community steering group to contribute feedback from hard-to-reach groups ensuring the building reflects local needs and aspirations.

We enjoyed a socially distanced tour of Milton Keynes recently from CultureMK for our exciting New Towns DETAILS publication commission. The set focuses on a range of details, including the bright and beautifully planted Centre:MK, distinctly different housing schemes, and the bespoke street furniture.
From our visit it was clear Milton Keynes is a town of many UK firsts. We are looking forward to visiting Stevenage in the near future as the next New Town in the set.

We have recently received planning consent for Morland Gardens, our 100% social housing scheme in the London Borough of Brent including 65 new council homes, a 2500m² state-of-the-art adult education centre with public café and 700m² of affordable workspace.
Cllr Amer Agha, Cabinet Member for Schools, Employment & Skills said:
“Given how Covid-19 has disproportionately affected Brent, both by case numbers and in its economic impact, this kind of new educational facility and the affordable workspace which will be provided, has never been needed more and so I’m very pleased that the committee voted in favour of the plans.”
Harlesden-based youth leadership consultant and member of the project’s Community Steering Group, Errol Donald, told the committee:
“In providing real hope and genuine opportunities for people to access affordable housing, specialist skills, training and custom-built work spaces, I feel the scheme will undoubtedly play a key role in supporting a community that has shown incredible resilience for as long as I can remember."

Our Pop-up Schools initiative has been longlisted in for the RIBA Rethink: 2025 Competiton - an international design competition for our post-pandemic world considering what our buildings, streets and communities might look in 2025, how the pandemic might modify the way we interact with space and one another and how design can mitigate its worst effects.
Our Pop-up proposal is immediate and flexible in its scope, proposing temporary low-cost emergency schools using recycled festival marquees to provide outdoor learning opportunities. You can read more on the project here.

Tomorrow (30th June) Director Wayne Head will be reading from Hōjōki
Retreating from an “unkind world” in 12c Japan the poet and Buddhist priest Kamo-no-Chomei left the capital of Kyoto following its devastation by earthquake, fire and storm in which 40,000 died.
He constructed a ten foot square hut and from this solitary vantage point Chomei produced extraordinary literary work...
As we contemplate and dream of new spatial conditions to improve social cohesion...let us reflect on Chomei’s experience...

Our Pop-Up Classroom mailer has gone out to leaders in education across the country. We have collaborated with BOB Design to create a pop-up flyer explaining how our concept supports a safe return to school. This has already led to several schools commissioning prototypes that provide a rapid expansion in classroom provision to enable socially distanced learning over the coming months.

We have secured planning permission for Adur and Worthing Councils in the redevelopment of Brooklands Park on the South Coast of England.
Our proposed cafe and visitor centre will act as a catalyst for wider regeneration of the park and aims to transform the area into a science and discovery hub through a park wide focus on STEM subjects. The centre will become both a gateway from the park’s east entrance and a focal point to the south, connecting the coast to the South Downs beyond.
Our proposal sits adjacent to the park's lake which provides long views out from the cafe as well as on colder days the building’s heating supply through a new ground source heat pump embedded in the lake. In warmer weather the form of the building offers the opportunity for visitors to shelter from the sun sitting on benching that wraps the south of the building underneath a generous overhanging roof. In the manner of the picturesque, visiting the cafe is experienced as a series of views, from the initial gateway between the cafe and amenity forms which frame a diagonal view across the lake, to stepping in to the cafe where low bird-hide windows restrict the view out, to a great reveal at the end, with large picture windows underneath a dome that will create a joyful space for the community to gather in.

We're delighted to hear that our Lexden Springs Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) school in Colchester has won the RICS East Social Impact Award 2020 in the Education category! The school was delivered on time, in budget and scored 10/10 for customer satisfaction.
The judges said "This project provides an excellent level of facility for young people who have mental and or physical requirements to better prepare them for life outside of the education system. This has been achieved through the collaborative approach of the school, local authority, design team and contractors."

Working with Original Marquees, our first pop-up classroom has now been installed on site at Manorfield Primary School in Tower Hamlets, London!
The temporary structure has been used to host classrooms and as a lunch area for pupils, delivering at least 25% more socially distanced capacity than what the school currently offers.
Paul Jackson, Headteacher, Manorfield Primary School, said, “Our children have been out of school for far too long. We want to bring as many children back to school in as safe a way as possible. We won’t bring back more children than it is safe to and need to find creative solutions to enable the wider opening of schools. The creation of additional pop-up accommodation in our playground will support us in doing this and meeting the needs of our children. We are very excited to see more of them returning to school.”

Our idea sees a series of pop-up, tent-like structures, each of which is arranged to follow the two-metre social distancing rule between pupils, with the adaptability to host different classroom setups. We propose reusing resources such as marquees and portable bathroom facilities from outdoor festivals that would otherwise be dormant during the current pandemic.

The world faces a great challenge, the duration and impact of which is yet unknown. Our focus at Curl la Tourelle Head Architecture means focusing on the work that we can control and where we can to mitigate the impact of those who cannot, whilst being mindful of the need for all of us to look after the health and wellbeing of ourselves and others. We have now trialed, and adopted, a policy of working from home for all of our staff, with everyone getting on with business, more or less as usual, from home.
Our infrastructure is well-coordinated and in place to support the design and delivery of our jobs, as well as its business operations, remains fully functional and adapted to suit these new circumstances.
Our Business Continuity Team continues to meet every other day, to review and assess the latest situation, to put in place any new measures as appropriate, and to communicate these to the wider practice (and externally) when necessary.
We send our best wishes to all of our staff working from home who have been amazing in transitioning so fluently to home working and many friends, clients and collaborators.

Last week we heard the fantastic news that the London Borough of Brent has approved our proposals for Morland Gardens - a socially focused mixed-use scheme including 65 new council homes, a 2500 square metre adult education centre and 700 square metres of affordable workspace.
Matthew Dibben, Head of Economic Growth, Employment and Skills says:
"There has been significant involvement and leadership from the local community, including a Community Steering Group that has informed design and purpose. It is in the heart of Stonebridge Ward, which has the lowest income and highest economic inactivity in the borough, a fantastic investment for this part of Brent and London."
The project has been designed with sustainability at the fore. The scheme will be one of the largest cross laminated timber buildings in the UK on completion, resulting in a 75% reduction in embodied CO2 over conventional concrete construction. An ambient loop heating system provides a 39% reduction in operational CO2 and extensive gardens and a sheltered courtyard gives residents over 2200 square metres of outdoor space, promoting healthy living and biodiversity.

2019 has been an exciting year for all at Curl la Tourelle Head Architecture as we continue to grow, expand in to new sectors and build on our expertise and relationships with existing clients. Large Scale - Mixed Use - Urban Housing - Brent
We are currently working on a ground-breaking project in the London Borough of Brent that we hope will be the tallest Cross Laminated Timber building in the UK. The mixed use scheme will be the new home to an adult education centre at ground level, with affordable workspace below rising up to 9 storeys of 100% social housing above, providing homes and opportunities for some of our capital’s most vulnerable people. By combining our knowledge of both the education and residential sectors we have found ways these typologies can compliment each other which allow for heat exchanges between the two, saving on the total carbon emissions and energy bills for all that will call it home.
Medium Scale - Hillside School - Special Educational Needs - Derbyshire
We are delighted to announce that during 2019 we secured planning permission for a special educational needs school in Derbyshire. We have also prepared tender documentation and anticipate starting on site in 2020. The school is planned as a “family” of wings connected by a central circulation link in order to provide a homely yet uncluttered learning environment that is non-clinical and fully inclusive. In doing this, the design aims to maximise student’s independence and choice to enhance their self-esteem and confidence.
Small Scale - Health led park regeneration - Worthing
2019 was also a successful year for bidding as we won the opportunity to design a new cafe and visitor centre space that acts as the catalyst for regeneration of parkland on the south coast near Brighton. The new cafe will be both a gateway from the park’s east entrance and a focal point from the coast whilst providing a starting point for a new science and discovery walk around the park’s lake. The semi-autonomous proposal utilises its lakeside setting by providing heat through a water source heat pump, energy through photovoltaics and minimises its waste through composting and a biodigester. Through testing innovations at a small scale we hope to bring new ideas and changes to our large scale projects.

Eleanor Hill (BA, MA) graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2019, her thesis was concerned with the affects of language on place, community and on urban development – in particular London housing estates, for which she was awarded the RCA Building Trust Prize by The Building Centre and previously awarded the Stephen Welsh Award from the University of Sheffield.
Rallou joins us after aiding the development of the spatial reading and urban strategy for the Meridian Water Masterplan in the London Borough of Enfield. She completed her Master’s Degree at Central Saint Martins in 2019, where her thesis project "Collectively Industrial" was nominated for a MAISON/ 0 Green Trail Award.
Francesca joins us after completing her undergraduate studies in Politecnico di Milano, Italy and Uppsala Universitet, Sweden, and her MA Architecture at the Royal college of Art, where she received the West RIBA Award in her fourth year. She has worked extensively across Europe and even refurbished a Portuguese Ilha (worker's house) with her carpentry skills.

CLTH is listed as one of the supporting practices of the AJ Retrofirst Campaign. Retrofit is fan more environmentally sustainable than demolition and rebuild. However, a lack of policy in this area and a distorted system of VAT which props up the industry status quo means that many practices still favour new build over retrofit. Planning Approval Confirmed for Alfreton Park Community Special School!
From its raised position on the natural ridge of land running down the centre of the tree-lined park site, the low-lying, contextual building blends into the landscape through following the natural contours of the site and using subtly coloured treated zinc cladding. A simple and efficient single storey pitched roof section is used throughout, a generator for elegance in its setting, creating open and light internal spaces for activities ranging from trampolining therapy to general learning.
Each classroom has sheltered play space, and carefully placed internal classroom screens allow consistent views to the tree-lined parkland surrounds. These design decisions endeavour to provide an enriching learning environment connecting the pupils to nature.

CLTH is pleased to announce that our Kidbrooke Park project, where we are working the Royal Borough of Greenwich, has received Planning Consent. Providing a replacement two form entry Primary School alongside a SEN Learning Centre, it is set on the edge of Metropolitan Open Land. Complete with an orchard it will provide the local community with additional sports facilities, enhancing the landscape setting. We are looking forward to continuing to work hard alongside the rest of the design team to move the project forward.

CLTH is excited to welcome Richard Taylor to our growing team! Richard is interested in community projects and is currently working with a childhood obesity charity project to design and build a mobile food bike to be used in schools.
Richard studied at Newcastle, Westminster and Sheffield University, on a unique course combining RIBA Part I and MEng Structural Engineering, with his thesis being nominated for RIBA North East Hadrian’s medal.
Having worked previously at Ben Adams Architects on a variety of projects in the Office, Residential, Leisure and Healthcare Sectors, Richard joins us to work on Wolverhampton Public Sector Hub, the largest mixed-use project the city has to date.

Sutton Social Housing will make use of an inventive green ventilation method. To avoid mechanical ventilation, each house is naturally ventilated using ‘chimneys’ for Passive Stack Ventilation, thereby omitting electric fans and maintenance issues. The ‘chimneys’ are a familiar domestic form and have been developed to suit a range of layouts and types.

Georgia joins us having recently exhibited her work in Ljubljana! Completing her Part II in Ferrara, Italy and with experience working in Austria, Spain and Italy she joins the Education team to work on Alfreton Park School, a new sustainable facility for students with special educational needs set in the beautiful Derbyshire Hills.
Simon joins us fresh from building a Straw Barn in the Utah Desert! Having studied in Newcastle, completing his Part III at Westminster and with experience working in London practices on large residential schemes, he joins the housing team to work with director Oliver on an exciting mixed use scheme where we are working with the London Borough of Brent to provide a new Adult Education Centre, Affordable Workspace and over 80 Homes at a range of tenures.

He is currently working with director Oliver and the residential team delivering social housing for the London Borough of Sutton. Wayne Head has been asked to join a team of twenty designers and environmental engineers as part of the LETI Mayor of London Initiative. Known collectively as 'Be Seen', they will develop a technical guidance road-map setting out the approach, targets and benchmarks that developments in the UK need to achieve to reach Net Zero in operation by 2020. This should ensure our climate change targets are met.

Director Wayne Head joined a panel of critics for The Bartlett's Masters programme end of term crits. The design research theme for the module, led by Hannah Corlett of studio Assemblage, was 'Wabi Sabi/Kintsugi'. The drawings pinned up, by architects from Greece and an artist from Romania, represent the markets of London; a celebration of historic ritual and a field for temporal social and spatial connections between different communities.

We were pleased to be part of Westminster University’s Detailed Design Study module, where 2nd Year BA Architecture students had an opportunity to discuss their projects with practising architects and University of Westminster’s staff.

Wayne has been in conversation with Danish practices SKALA and Mutopia, Based in Copenhagen and Horsens, to develop a collaborative working model based around Nordic design principles. We hope to bring the Danish model of high-density, low impact housing to the UK, principles that London can certainly benefit from.

Building from the collection of booklets, the Sir John Soane's Museum will be hosting a series of talks asking speakers to reflect on a particular detail – whether social, aesthetic, literary, environmental, political, or architectural.
Opened by Professor Charles Holland, of Charles Holland Architects, on the 31st of January, and finishing on the 18th of April, the series features of a variety of talent, from architect Elly Ward to Foster and Partners' Armstrong Yakubu.

Director Wayne Head was invited to present on the conceptual Thames Tidal School project for World Green Building Week. Hosted by Elementa Engineering, the breakfast event brought together architects, engineers and developers alike to learn and discuss the massive impact tidal power can have on London as a city. As part of the #netzero initiative, the project aims to reduce London CO2 emissions to zero by 2050.

Engineers Elementa have written about their "delight" in being a part of the Thames Tidal School Project.
With a focus on green energy, "the building is designed to achieve two major sustainability certifications, the Passivhaus Standard and the BREEAM Outstanding rating", allowing it to run off and sell energy harvested from the Thames.

We have been undertaking important research on a study on behalf of a major London NHS trust. We developed strategies for how they might improve their North London centre for patients with Dementia through varying degrees of remodelling.

Work continues apace on our exciting designs for the expansion of Robert Clack School, across 3 sites in Dagenham, London Borough of Barking. Construction is expected to complete in phases with new state-of-the-art learning and assembly facilities opening on Robert Clack’s existing sites in September 2018 and a new, all through school being delivered on a new site at Lymington Fields for September 2019. On completion the school will offer 18 secondary level forms of entry, 3 primary and a nursery. Will this be the largest school in the country?

Designed in 2008 in collaboration with Land Design Studio, London, the Sutton Life Centre offered an unprecedented new building typology, combining an immersive learning environment and community library.
Children navigate a series of physical and immersive environments communicating life skills, citizenship issues and community involvement. The environments are adaptable for all age groups with the ability to create personalised digital environments. Cutting edge sustainable earth tube, biomass boiler, and rainwater harvesting technology provides 40% renewables, and an eco and local habitat garden offers green space for users to enjoy.

The third volume of Details is inspired by the English county of Essex's radical architectural sites.
The series has been developed in collaboration with Focal Point Gallery for release at the Essex Architecture Weekend 2016. It has been supported by London-based architectural practice AHMM, and is available at bookshops including Serpentine Galleries, Whitechapel Gallery, the AA Bookshop, and the RIBA Bookshop.

CLTH have been delighted to participate in a public consultation alongside the Building Exploratory and Turkington Martin.
The team presented proposals for a new pavilion and super-playground, and spoke with visitors about enhancing accessibility, lifting quality, and protecting the park's Victorian heritage and ecological diversity.
Proposals are to be submitted for planning in the Autumn.

Curl la Tourelle Head Architecture is pleased to reveal its RIBA Competition entry to design a new visitor hub to support Langley Vale Wood’s 180,000 visits per annum.
CLTH’s concept, designed by Wayne Head, Patricia Ruiz, Sara Usai and Songyang Zhou was for an impressive flexible exhibition space with a stunning living roof, which would improve the profile of Langley Vale Wood as a destination for local residents and visitors, whilst providing a fitting tribute to those affected by the First World War.

CLTH are delighted to progress proposals for a new community project set in the heart of Peckham Rye Common.
The scheme will accommodate the existing relocated One O'Clock Club for children, a Community sports facility, associated offices and community rooms and at roof level an early years nursery.
The project sits in a prominent location at the heart of the Aylesbury master plan, designed and led by HTA, for clients Southwark Local Authority and Notting Hill Housing Trust.#
